The Calfternship

Gaining Experience

What is the Calfternship?

The Calfternship was created as an opportunity for the best and the brightest third- and fourth-year veterinary students with a strong interest in bovine medicine and research. It offers a paid externship focused on calves. Calfterns will receive a $500 travel stipend along with a $500 stipend for each week they spend on the Calfternship. Additionally, CalfCare will arrange housing during the Calfternship.

Students will spend their 2-3 week-long externship working closely with our veterinarians and staff, engaging with clients and their calves. During this time, externs will participate in a range of activities including consultations, research trial design and/or assistance, caretaking of research animals, processing of these animals, responding to emergency calls, creating vaccination protocols, diagnostics, and conducting necropsies. Additionally, each extern is expected to develop a presentation on a special case or topic encountered during their time on the Calfternship. This presentation will be shared with the group on their last Thursday here, during the morning vet meeting.

How do I get chosen for the Calfternship?

Students will apply using the attached Application along with a resume and cover letter explaining why they should be one of the students chosen for the Calfternship. Applications should be postmarked or emailed on or before March 31, 2024 for Fall 2024 and by September 30, 2024 for Spring 2025. A committee of CalfCare employees will then review the applications and select up to six Calfterns for the upcoming school year.
