Dr. Jan Gawthrop, Veterinarian
Dr. Jan Gawthrop has specialized in calf veterinary work under the practice name of CalfCare since 1992. Dr. Gawthrop’s main focus is calf management and disease prevention. Dr. Gawthrop’s goal is to become the producer’s partner to raise healthy, profitable calves. He strives to help our clients raise quality calves to provide wholesome food for the world. Dr. Gawthrop graduated from Purdue University in 1975 with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and has never stopped learning. Dr. Gawthrop continues to seek out smarter ways to raise calves by offering contract research services. When he is not visiting clients or caring for calves, he enjoys spending time with his children and six grandchildren, tending his flowers and working in his garden. Dr. Gawthrop is active in his community, sharing his passion with 4H members and school groups, as well as serving on advisory boards and is a member of AABP and AVC.
Dr. Christen McKaig, Veterinarian
Dr. Christen McKaig “Dr. Christy” has been serving CalfCare clients and calves since 2012. Dr. McKaig’s interest in cattle started at a young age. She grew up on a dairy farm in Logansport, IN. Dr. McKaig completed her bachelor’s degree in Animal Science at Purdue University, and then graduated from the Purdue School of Veterinary Medicine in 2008 with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. Dr. McKaig’s inspiration is providing a safe and abundant food supply on both a local and global level. She appreciates the work and sacrifice of farmers to provide for their communities. Dr. McKaig wants Americans to be proud of the quality food they serve their families. Dr. McKaig is a member of AABP and AVC and recently provided veterinary care during a mission trip to Africa. When Dr. McKaig is not consulting with clients, she enjoys tending to her own cattle, garden and chickens.
Dr. Kevin Funk, Veterinarian
Dr. Kevin Funk has partnered with CalfCare since 2015. Dr. Funk practiced mixed and dairy medicine throughout Wisconsin, Minnesota and Washington for 26 years prior to joining CalfCare. Dr. Funk received his bachelor’s degree from Eastern Illinois University and attended graduate school at Southern Illinois University. Dr. Funk graduated from the University of Illinois in 1989 with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and has been on the “moo”ve ever since! Growing up in Lincoln, Illinois, Dr. Kevin was inspired to dedicate his career to veterinary medicine from a young age. He enjoys watching clients achieve success in their business. Dr. Funk also has a passion for solving difficult cases, whether on a herd or individual level. While at CalfCare, he has developed an interest in thoracic ultrasound. In his free time, Dr. Funk participates in community theater and enjoys traveling and spending time with his wife, daughters and rat terrier, Weasley. Dr. Funk is a member of AVC and AABP.
Dr. Anne Budzinski, Veterinarian
Dr. Anne Budzinski (pronounced Annie Ba-jin-skee) has consulted with CalfCare since 2015. Dr. Budzinski completed her bachelor’s degree at Michigan State University in Animal Science and graduated as a Production Animal Scholar in 2011. Dr. Budzinski is a 2015 graduate of Michigan State University with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. Dr. Budzinski grew up on a small beef farm in northern Michigan where she raised beef, pork, hens, potatoes and crops. Dr. Budzinski’s passion is partnering with clients to troubleshoot common calf problems and find solutions. Dr. Budzinski enjoys educating clients about techniques and protocols to improve production and welfare. In her free time, Dr. Budzinski likes to dabble in art and music projects and is a choir member at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church. She also enjoys spending time with her husband on their farm where they grow crops, gather honey, and produce maple syrup for the local farmer’s market. Dr. Budzinski enjoys educating children about agriculture and is an active member of AABP and AVC.
